BA Classical Studies

Is this programme for me?

BA Classical Studies offers an insight into the Classical world, and the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome. These cultures underpin much of the cultural development of modern Europe, and gave us great works of literature, the Western philosophical tradition, and a powerful artistic and architectural vocabulary. It also bequeathed cultural and political institutions and concepts - such as democracy and imperialism - that are still of major relevance today.

The programme therefore offers an education in a range of discplines, including philosophy, literature, archaeology and history. You will learn how to analyse texts and artefacts, to explore new ideas crtiically, and to broaden your perspective on the world.

Programme aims

to provide you with opportunities to explore the diverse range of ancient world studies, and to develop knowledge and understanding of Classical antiquity
to cultivate a broad range of skills - the ability to think critically, assess evidence of many kinds and express ideas with precision - all of which are highly valued by employers. These skills can be transferred to many different careers or provide a grounding for further academic study.

The degree consists of 12 units.

The programme has been developed by academics within the Department of Classics at Royal Holloway, University of London, rated in the top category for teaching and research.

Flexible study period, flexible payment

You have between 3-8 years to complete the programme. You can choose to pay the total fee in advance (£9,880) or pay as you go (a one-off registration fee plus a fee for each unit studied).

An innovative approach to learning

The programme is offered online and is fully supported by an online learning environment (OLE), which functions rather like a virtual classroom. The OLE allows you to:

access your study materials
take part in discussions/seminars with your tutor and other students
receive notices, seminar dates, project support and other programme-related information
ask questions regarding the administration of the programme
seek help for technical problems that you may encounter.

Study support/materials

There are various ways in which you can engage in online networking and communication on the programme:

Online seminars moderated by a tutor
A course tutor, available to support the course from the time you register through to the time of your examination
Peer to peer support. You are encouraged to exchange ideas with fellow students on the course and to organise mutual support via email
Student cafe. An informal space within the OLE where you can socialise.
